Marking the first collaboration between legendary director Akira Kurosawa and the then unknown actor Toshiro Mifune, Drunken Angel is a film noir set in the cesspools and back alleys of gloomy post-war Tokyo and a commentary on the Yakuza culture of occupied Japan.

Mifune stars as a volatile criminal who strikes up an unlikely relationship with Takashi Shimura's alcoholic physician. More than just a gangster film, Drunken Angel marks Kurosawa's breakthrough as an auteur.
